Heddon for Nature is an initiative to create a nature rich environment and improved biodiversity in Parracombe and the upper Heddon Valley.
A group of local volunteers is working with Parracombe Parish Council and Devon Wildlife Trust Northern Devon Natural Solutions project to encourage the use of natural solutions – habitat restoration and creation, enhancement of permanent pasture, natural flood management schemes and wilding. The group will be working with farmers, land owners, householders and local council to take action benefiting the upper Heddon Valley’s environment.
One of the first activities has been habitat restoration at two local sites owned by Parracombe Parish Council on behalf of the community of Parracombe. This project has been supported by Exmoor National Park Farming in Protected Landscapes funding to secure boundary fencing, let in more light by crown lifting mature boundary tree lines and controlling invasive species.
Groups of volunteers from the community have helped with clearing brash, creating access steps and dead hedges to give safe access and secure boundaries.
